The definition of healthy menu offerings continues to transform in the mind of consumers and along with their willingness to order better-for-you menu options when dining out. 40% of foodservice consumers say they don’t just consider ordering healthy food, but actually follow through (according to Technomic). Operators who are considering offering healthier options need to consider on trend health claims that appeal to a variety of customers including natural, not processed, no preservatives.
Traditional pizza is the leading entrée on LSR menus, but the traditional pie is evolving as consumers tastes and eating habits develop. Appetizer pizza with non-traditional flavors and toppings, allow customers to share and taste beyond their entrée choice. Smaller flat bread pizzas also sanction a more tappas like experience that guests are craving.
While all day breakfast has opened consumer’s eyes to a whole new way of eating, it’s also driven their desire for new and innovative flavors and offerings beyond traditional breakfast. The fastest growing LSR breakfast sandwiches have moved beyond egg, cheese and protein to “other” which includes locally sourced chicken, fish or a seasonal item and sauces to deliver spice (up 26% according to Technomic).
Today’s consumers rely on caffeinated beverages to make their world go-round. Specialty tea and coffee continue to grow in popularity among all age groups, from moms to teens. According to Technomic, traditional southern sweet tea is one of the fastest growing beverage choices among LSR & FSR customers. Also, flavored coffees and teas are some of the fastest growing and easiest to add to menus. Cold brew and specialty brewed coffees that are nitrogentated are tantalizing consumers and driving additional daypart visits.
